Final Battle

By the time the Nez Perce reached the Bear Paw Mountains in Montana, they were exhausted. Supplies were running out. They had been fighting and fleeing for months. On September 30 another battle with the army began.

After five days of fighting, the Nez Perce knew they couldn’t win and they couldn’t continue. U.S. military leaders were impressed the Nez Perce had lasted so long. Chief Joseph had earned the nickname “the Red Napoleon.” His skills and tactics were equal to those of Napoleon Bonaparte, leader of France in the early 1800s. Nevertheless, the Nez Perce War ended October 5, 1877, with Chief Joseph’s surrender.
